Lagos residents looking to stock up on discounted groceries ahead of Easter can rejoice! Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced the “Ounje Eko” Sunday Market will be held this Friday, March 29th, in the spirit of the Easter celebration.
“We understand the importance of affordability during this festive period,” Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotosho said in a statement. “This is why Governor Sanwo-Olu directed the market to open a day early.”
Food vendors across the state’s five divisions will have access to discounted essentials at all 57 designated “Ounje Eko” centres, excluding the State Secretariat market. These discounts offer a significant 25% reduction on regular market prices for staples like rice, beans, pepper, bread, eggs, garri, and more.
The “Ounje Eko” programme is a key component of the EKO CARES initiative, designed to alleviate economic hardship for Lagosians. Governor Sanwo-Olu, through the Special Dispensation Advisory Committee on Social Interventions (SPEDAC), remains committed to easing the financial burden on residents.
“The EKO CARES programme encompasses various measures across healthcare, education, and transportation,” Omotosho explained. “The ‘Ounje Eko’ market is just one aspect of this broader effort.”
Launched on March 17th, 2024, the “Ounje Eko” programme will continue even after the Easter celebrations conclude, offering ongoing support to Lagos residents.
