NPFL Match Day 28 recap: Akwa United stumbles, Enyimba and Shooting Stars secure wins

On a bustling Wednesday in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), host team Akwa United faced a stunning setback as they fell 0-1 to visitors Doma United FC of Gombe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo. Despite controlling much of the game, Akwa United’s overconfidence proved costly as Emmanuel Jesam’s lone goal in the 10th minute sealed their fate.

Reflecting on the loss, Akwa United’s Coach, Muhammed Babaganaru, attributed the defeat to his team’s complacency, stating, “Maybe the boys underrated Doma United players or they were overconfident in the game, that’s what really affected us today.” Despite the setback, Babaganaru remains optimistic about his team’s prospects, expressing confidence in their ability to avoid relegation.

In another fixture, Enyimba International FC of Aba delivered a resounding 5-0 thrashing to visiting Kano Pillars FC at the Enyimba Stadium. The home team showcased their dominance with a commanding performance, highlighted by goals from Eze Ekwutoziam, Chijioke Mbaoma, and Joseph Atule. Enyimba’s coach, Finidi George, praised his team’s efforts, emphasising their determination to secure favourable results in upcoming matches.

Meanwhile, Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan secured a 2-0 victory over Kwara United Football Club, propelling them to sixth place on the NPFL table. The host team displayed resilience in the face of Kwara United’s attacks before Abdullahi Lawal and Adewale Yusuf sealed the win with goals in the second half.

The NPFL Match Day 28 also witnessed notable victories for Rangers International Football Club of Enugu, who defeated Sunshine Stars FC 2-0, and for Bendel Insurance FC, who secured a 3-1 win against Niger Tornadoes FC.

As the league progresses, teams continue to battle for supremacy, with every match crucial in determining their standings. The NPFL remains a fiercely contested competition, promising thrilling encounters and unpredictable outcomes in the weeks to come.
