Fatal collision in Lagos claims pedestrian’s life, triggers rescue operation

Tragedy struck in Lagos on Tuesday when a collision involving three commercial vehicles resulted in the death of a male pedestrian. The accident, which occurred at Ketu by Demurin Junction inward Kosofe, Lagos, at approximately 6:45 a.m., involved a Toyota Hiace Bus and two Volkswagen commercial buses.

Confirming the incident, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), stated, “The multiple fatal accident occurred at Ketu, by Demurin Junction inward Kosofe, Lagos, around 6.45 a.m.”

Amidst the chaos, LASTMA personnel swiftly intervened, rescuing a trapped female passenger from one of the Volkswagen commercial buses. Taofiq highlighted the collaborative effort between LASTMA and the Lagos State Ambulance Service in facilitating the rescue operation.

The prompt response from LASTMA personnel led to the apprehension of a commercial bus driver involved in the collision, with support from officers of the Alapere Police Station ensuring security during the rescue efforts.

Olawaye Olugbenga, Head of Zone 32 Ketu at LASTMA, spearheaded the rescue operations, overseeing the swift evacuation of the commercial buses to clear the road for uninterrupted traffic flow towards Kosofe and Mile 12 area.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, issued a plea to pedestrians, urging them to utilise designated bus stops for boarding commercial buses. Additionally, he cautioned both commercial and private drivers to adhere to speed limits and conduct thorough vehicle inspections before embarking on journeys, emphasising safety as a top priority.

As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the collision, authorities are doubling down on efforts to enhance road safety and prevent such incidents from recurring.
