Enugu Rangers International Football Club of Enugu clinched a hard-fought victory on Sunday as they triumphed 1-0 over Akwa United FC in matchday 20 of the Nigeria Professional Football League 2023/24 season.
The showdown unfolded at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, where Rangers and Akwa United showcased their prowess on the field. Despite both teams missing several scoring opportunities, it was Enugu Rangers who emerged victorious.
Chief Coach of Rangers, Dani Suleiman, expressed his thoughts on the game, stating, “The performance of my team was not as encouraging as I would have liked, but I am thankful that we managed to secure the maximum points against a formidable opponent like Akwa United.”
Throughout the first half, neither side managed to break the deadlock, resulting in a goalless stalemate as both defences held firm against the attacking onslaught.
However, the dynamic of the match shifted in the second half when Kenneth Igboke of Rangers seized an opportunity and propelled his team into the lead with a powerful strike from outside the 18-yard box.
In a dramatic turn of events, Akwa United was awarded a penalty in the 60th minute, presenting them with a chance to level the score. Unfortunately for Akwa United, the penalty attempt went amiss, leaving them trailing behind.
Despite relentless efforts from Enugu Rangers to extend their lead, they were unable to capitalise on further scoring opportunities. Conversely, Akwa United’s endeavours to equalise proved futile as they struggled to breach Rangers’ defence.
Reflecting on the performance of both teams, Suleiman acknowledged the strength of Akwa United, remarking, “Akwa United is a good team, they played very well, but I am happy that we emerged victorious.”
With this hard-earned triumph, Enugu Rangers continue to solidify their position in the Nigeria Professional Football League, showcasing resilience and determination in their quest for success.
