Community leaders in Lagos appeal for urgent action against rising cultism

The Ibassa/Ijegun-Egba Youth Association in Oriade Local Council Development Area of Lagos has raised an alarm over the increasing menace of cultism in the area. The Chairman of the Association, Mr. Kareem Idowu, expressed deep concern about the escalating level of insecurity caused by cultist activities in the community.

Idowu revealed in a statement that the situation had created an atmosphere of fear, making it challenging for residents to go about their daily lives. He explained, “Residents and indigenes of our community are finding it difficult to walk freely; the merchants cannot go about their businesses without fear. The children can no longer go to school, and all the activities of the community have been placed on hold due to the criminal activities of these notorious cult members.”

The chairman highlighted that the issue initially began as a rivalry between cults but has now escalated into more severe criminal activities, including daylight robbery, extortion, and attempted rape. Idowu pointed out that these cult members are not indigenous to the community, suggesting external influences.

Mr. Wakili Jaiyeolu, the General Secretary of the association, emphasised the cultural roots of the town in Yoruba traditions, where co-existence in peace and harmony was the norm. He lamented the current situation, stating, “Cultists have taken over the community’s sanity. They are fully armed and connected, quick in getting security reports and other information, making community members scared of divulging their criminal activities.”

Jaiyeolu urged the Lagos State Government, the Inspector-General of Police, and other relevant agencies to intervene promptly before the situation escalates further. He appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, to address the community’s plight.

The community leaders affirmed their commitment to supporting the Nigeria Police in eradicating cultism, emphasising their desire to reinstate peace and harmony within the community through legal means.
