Doma United triumphs, secures top spot in NPFL standings

Doma United Football Club of Gombe State regained their perch atop the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) standings with a resounding 2-0 victory over Katsina United on Match Day 17 of the 2023/2024 season at the Pantami Township Stadium, Gombe.

Securing their ninth win of the season, Doma United showcased early dominance, netting two goals in the first half from Bidemi Owoku in the 2nd minute and Samuel Enefiok in the 8th minute.

“We aimed to seize the game early, and the boys executed it perfectly,” commented Akinade Onigbinde, Doma United’s head coach.

Onigbinde expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, emphasising the significance of claiming maximum points at home and aiming for positive results on the road. He highlighted the crucial nature of the win in their pursuit of maintaining a top-three position by February’s conclusion.

“Our focus remains on securing favourable results. Sustaining our position among the top three is our goal,” Onigbinde remarked.

He stressed the importance of outcomes in football, stating, “Results matter more than anything else in this sport. It’s about converting opportunities into victories.”

Regarding their strategy, Onigbinde revealed his instructions to his players to capitalise on early opportunities and secure the lead in the first half.

“Our plan was to establish our advantage early on and manage the game,” he explained. “We took control in the first half, which set the tone for the match.”

However, Katsina United’s head coach, Bala Abubakar, declined to provide comments to journalists following the match.
