Ondo mourns the demise of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu

The passing of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has sparked mourning across the nation. Aged 67, Governor Akeredolu succumbed to complications arising from prostate cancer while receiving medical treatment in Germany. His demise, announced in the early hours of Wednesday, December 27, has left a profound void in the hearts of many.

President Bola Tinubu expressed deep grief over the passing of his “beloved brother, confidant, and political soul mate.” Tinubu hailed Akeredolu’s advocacy for justice and equity, citing his unwavering commitment to national security, infrastructure development, and legislative excellence.

Expressing deep sorrow, Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra lamented the loss, describing Akeredolu’s death as a personal and collective tragedy for the people of Ondo State and Nigeria. Soludo hailed the departed governor’s dedication to good governance and his unwavering fight for the rights of his people, acknowledging Akeredolu’s legacy of remarkable achievements in improving security, infrastructure, and economic growth in Ondo State.

In similar sentiments, Dr. Abbas Mimiko, a psychiatrist and an aspirant in the 2024 Ondo governorship election, eulogised Akeredolu as a fine legal mind and a staunch advocate for true federalism, notably through his efforts in establishing the Amotekun Security Network. Mimiko highlighted Akeredolu’s role in curbing insecurity in the Southwest, significantly reducing incidents of violence and banditry.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Canada paid homage to Akeredolu, acknowledging his integrity, courage, and dedication to good governance. Dr. Abiola Oshodi, the Vice Chairman of APC in Canada, lauded Akeredolu’s monumental contributions and described his death as a colossal loss to Ondo State and Nigeria.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, among others, remembered Akeredolu as a distinguished leader whose astuteness in public service and commitment to shaping national interests will always be revered.

In response to the mourning, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa announced a three-day period of mourning in Ondo State, calling for fasting, prayer, and flags to be flown at half-mast as a tribute to the departed governor. The state government has suspended official ceremonies during this period and opened condolence registers in various locations.
