Sporting Lagos triumph over Katsina United as Kano Pillars’ Abdullahi shines with five goals in NPFL weekend action

In the Nigerian Premier Football League’s Match Day 11 fixtures, Sporting Lagos secured a hard-fought victory over Katsina United, sealing a 1-0 win at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium, Onikan, Lagos on Sunday. This triumph marked a notable highlight among the weekend’s NPFL events.

However, the spotlight of the day belonged to Kano Pillars’ young prodigy, Yusuf Abdullahi, who delivered a stellar performance, scoring an impressive five goals in a remarkable 5-2 triumph away to Gombe United at the Pantami Township Stadium.

In a post-match conference, Kano Pillars’ Technical Adviser, Abdullahi Maikaba, expressed immense satisfaction with Abdullahi’s exceptional feat. He exclaimed, “My happiness is that one of the brilliant talents that is coming up in Nigeria has scored all the five goals. It is a wonderful day for Kano Pillars, me, and my team.”

Abdullahi Maikaba applauded Abdullahi’s persistence, mentioning, “I have been telling him that the first goal is the key. If he can get his first goal, it will motivate him to score more. I am happy that his first goal geared him up to get four more in just one match.”


Yusuf Abdullahi, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), described his five-goal feat as a monumental achievement in his football career, expressing gratitude and attributing the victory to divine intervention. He joyfully exclaimed, “This is the first time I am playing in the NPFL, and my joy is immeasurable.”

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the league, Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan played out a goalless draw against Heartland Football Club of Owerri at the Lekan Salami Stadium. Despite numerous attempts by the hosts, including efforts from Abdullahi Lawal and Gafar Olafimihan, neither side managed to break the deadlock.

The weekend’s NPFL action concluded with various results, including Bayelsa United FC drawing 2-2 against Abia Warriors FC, Remo Stars FC securing a 1-0 win over Plateau United FC, and a postponed match between Rangers International FC and Rivers United FC.

In the aftermath of the exhilarating matches, fans celebrated Abdullahi’s extraordinary performance, with some rushing to capture moments with the talented young player.
