In a captivating semi-final showdown at the U.S. Open, the seasoned Novak Djokovic terminated Ben Shelton’s remarkable dream run in three sets, adding a twist by replicating the young American’s favored on-court celebration.
Djokovic, the seasoned veteran, withstood a late-match resurgence from the 20-year-old Shelton, securing his place in his 10th U.S. Open final. To cap off his victory, Djokovic playfully mimicked Shelton’s viral post-win gesture, pretending to answer a phone and then abruptly hanging up.
“I just love Ben’s celebration,” Djokovic admitted with a grin when asked by reporters. “I thought it was very original, and I copied him. I stole his celebration.”
Shelton, unaware of Djokovic’s playful homage until after the match, responded graciously, saying he would not dictate how another player celebrates.
“I think if you win the match, you deserve to do whatever you want,” Shelton remarked. “You know, as a kid growing up, I always learned that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so that’s all I have to say about that.”
Shelton’s celebratory move was borrowed from Grant Holloway, a three-time 110-meter hurdles world champion. Holloway, who was pleased to see his celebration embraced at the U.S. Open, reposted photos and footage of Shelton on social media.
Explaining the gesture earlier in the tournament, Shelton said, “It’s kind of like I’m saying I’m dialled in.”
Despite the loss, Shelton, known for his powerful game, won over the home crowd and earned their support. He ousted two higher-ranked Americans, Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe, in the fourth round and the quarter-finals, respectively.
“The two weeks as a whole was a good run for me. A lot of positives to take away for the rest of the year and going into next year,” Shelton reflected on his impressive U.S. Open journey.
