Environment Commissioner Bello demands environmental responsibility from Lagosians

As Yuletide draws near, Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, urged citizens on Thursday to actively protect their environment while having fun.

In a statement that he personally signed, Bello stated that the government is doing everything it can to step up efforts to combat the scourge of climate change in the state. He also urged all citizens to embrace cleanliness in all forms and all safety standards.

The Commissioner said, “We had embarked on a comprehensive all-year-round cleaning and maintenance, dredging of drainage channels/canals and construction of new drainage, and these projects have paid off”.

“Some States were unfortunately devastated by floods this year, Lagos despite its peculiarities as a coastal state with low-lying terrains and a high-population density, among others, coped well,” Bello emphasised.

A lot of waste will be produced during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, so it is important to properly dispose of all waste by sorting, bagging, and putting it at designated points. He emphasised that Lagosians must show the greatest amount of love to the environment by not desecrating it even as they celebrate in moderation.

The Commissioner gave the residents of Lagos the reassurance that the Lagos State Rubbish Management Authority (LAWMA) will appropriately respond by hauling away any waste or trash that could be produced during the time.

Bello said that the current administration is leading the charge for healthier citizens and a cleaner environment, and he urged Lagosians to refrain from actions that can harm the environment.

Additionally, he warned locals against keeping gasoline and other combustible items in their houses, places of business, retail establishments, or marketplaces since doing so might contribute to the spread of fires, especially during this time of year when almost everything is dry and flammable.

Additionally, he warned drivers to be cautious of the foggy harmattan weather, which might cause visibility to drop to less than 10 metres and emphasised that before starting any journey, drivers should check that all of the vehicle’s components are in excellent working order.

Bello also used the opportunity to wish everyone in Lagos Metropolis a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
