The Oba Saheed Elegushi Foundation on Friday gave sanitary supplies to 1,000 high school girls in the Ikate area of Lagos State.
The gifts were given away as a part of celebrations for the International Day of the Girl-Child in 2022.
The annual event on October 11 aims to bring attention to the issues facing girls around the world and encourage the realisation of their basic rights.
According to the foundation’s founder, Oba Saheed Elegushi of the Ikate/Elegushi Kingdom, the goal was to “celebrate the girl-child” by lending financial and organisational support to local efforts to promote girls’ safety and empowerment.
Ikate kingdom’s Aro Oba, Chief Lekan Bakare, and his consort, Ms. Aiki Odiawa, represented the traditional ruler at the ceremony.
NGOs and businesses were urged by Elegushi to assist the government in its mission to increase the number of females who complete secondary school.
Badore Health Centre primary care physician Dr. Ufuoma Adingwupu guided the girls in maintaining hygiene and health throughout menstruation.
To avoid infections, she advises that patients adhere strictly to good hygiene practices before, during, and after their menstrual cycles.
Precious Salami, one of the pupils, expressed her joy at having benefited from the programme.
Gbara Secondary School and both Ilasan Junior and Senior Secondary Schools are among those visited.
