7 persons feared dead in fatal shooting

Unconfirmed reports say that up to seven persons may have been shot dead as security agents opened fire on young protesters who, in apparent defiance of an earlier announced curfew, sat on the floor at the Lekki Toll gate locked in arms, singing the Nigerian national anthem.

A 24-hour curfew had been announced by Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu which was to have commenced at 4pm on Tuesday, 20th October 2020.

But the curfew was later shifted to 9pm to allow for commuters who were already out at the time of the announcement to make it back home on time.

The security agents probably acting on the governor’s first order opted to engage the protesters with live ammunition.

The youths unmoved by threat of possible live fire chose to sit on the floor with their arms locked,

As the shots rang out, they begun to sing the Nigerian national anthem.

After the volley of shots had rang out, many youths lay injured.

There has been no confirmation of the number of fatalities but various unverified tweets report that up to seven persons may be feared dead.

#EndSARS protesters at Alausa, Ikeja who defied the curfew are, however, unharmed.

There has been no official statement from the Nigeria Police or from the Lagos State Governor at this time.
