Five readers in Lagos are attempting to set a Guinness World Record by reading aloud non-stop for 424 hours over 18 days. The event began on August 12 and will run until August 30, 2025, at The Library Lagos, 82 Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Victoria Island.
The challenge — billed as the longest marathon reading aloud by a team — is designed to promote a love of books while showcasing Lagos as a city of culture and creativity. Organisers say the effort will not only attempt to make history but also inspire more people to read for pleasure.
The reading marathon features literary-themed activities, live music, cultural performances, and appearances by celebrated authors and public figures. Visitors can join in by attending readings, participating in book-inspired events, or simply soaking in the lively atmosphere.
Sponsored by The Library Lagos, the initiative is part of efforts to encourage literacy and community engagement. “History is better when it’s told in style,” the organisers said, inviting Lagos residents to be part of the record-breaking journey.
The Guinness World Record attempt will continue until the evening of August 30, when the team hopes to complete the required hours and enter the history books.
