Stakeholders discuss Certified Accreditors Programme implementation

The recently launched Certified Accreditors Programme (CAP) by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu continues to spark discussions among key stakeholders in Lagos’ construction and urban development sectors. The initiative, introduced on March 8, 2025, aims to improve building safety and compliance by accrediting private professionals to work alongside government agencies.

In ongoing dialogues, construction experts, architects, and developers have raised critical questions about the programme’s implementation framework. Topics under consideration include the criteria for accrediting professionals, the scope of their responsibilities, and mechanisms for ensuring accountability and transparency.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ forum held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) conference room, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, reassured participants of the government’s commitment to engaging all relevant parties. “We recognise that collaboration is essential for the success of CAP. These discussions are necessary to fine-tune the operational details and ensure the programme delivers on its promise of safer buildings,” he stated.

The discussions also highlighted the socio-economic benefits of CAP, such as reducing the risk of building collapses, attracting investors, and creating job opportunities for certified professionals. However, participants stressed the need for robust monitoring systems to prevent potential abuses and ensure compliance with building regulations.

Civil society organisations have also joined the conversation, advocating for inclusivity and transparency. They urged the government to ensure that small-scale developers and contractors, who are often excluded from such programmes, can participate and benefit from the initiative.

As the dialogue continues, stakeholders have expressed optimism about the potential of CAP to transform Lagos’ construction landscape. The government is expected to release additional details on the programme’s implementation in the coming weeks.
