Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to leveraging the state’s waterways for tourism and transportation as part of its broader economic development strategy. Speaking at the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta on Saturday, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the event as a celebration of the state’s heritage and an opportunity to showcase its rich tourism potential.
The regatta, themed “Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,” took place simultaneously at Victoria Island and across Lagos’ five divisions: Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Epe. The governor, joined by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and members of the State Executive Council, participated in a boat ride to mark the event.
“We are excited to kick off the Lagos Boat Regatta as the beginning of many activities this yuletide season,” Sanwo-Olu said. “This event demonstrates our commitment to developing tourism in Lagos. One-third of our state is surrounded by water, and we are leveraging this to create a strong ecosystem for tourism while expanding our transportation system.”
The governor emphasized the dual purpose of the waterways, noting that they serve as both a practical mode of transportation and a platform for cultural and economic activities. “Today, you will see displays of various water infrastructure and captivating regattas from our five divisions,” he added, inviting Lagosians to enjoy the sights and sounds of the event.
The Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, highlighted the regatta’s impact on cultural pride and economic growth. “This year’s theme underscores the integral role our waterways play in shaping our history and identity as Lagosians,” she said.
Benson-Awoyinka described the regatta as a multisensory celebration of community heritage, featuring parades, traditional boat races, and vibrant dance performances. “This event boosts tourism and creates opportunities for local businesses, further cementing Lagos’ reputation as a premier global destination,” she added.
The regatta showcased Lagos’ commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation. “Through this celebration, we are not just honoring our traditions but also fostering unity and promoting responsible use of our waterways,” Benson-Awoyinka said, commending Governor Sanwo-Olu’s visionary leadership.
