Gospel music sensation Sinach is embroiled in a legal battle over her globally acclaimed song “Way Maker.” The lawsuit, filed by music producer Michael Oluwole, also known as Maye, seeks ₦5 billion in damages for alleged co-authorship and copyright infringement.
Maye claims that he played a significant role in the creation of “Way Maker,” contributing to the recording, mixing, and instrumental elements of the song. According to Maye, these contributions were made without proper compensation or formal agreements. “I was deeply involved in the production process, and it’s disheartening to see my efforts go unrecognized,” Maye stated in his court filing.
Sinach, whose real name is Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu, has denied all allegations through her legal team. “Sinach is the sole author of ‘Way Maker,’ and any claims to the contrary are unfounded,” her lawyer asserted. The song, released in 2015, has since become a global anthem, covered by numerous artists and translated into multiple languages.
The case, which has garnered significant attention in the music industry, has been adjourned to January 2025 for further hearing. Legal experts suggest that this lawsuit could set a precedent for future copyright disputes in Nigeria’s music scene. “This case highlights the importance of clear agreements and proper recognition in collaborative creative processes,” commented a legal analyst.
“Way Maker” has not only elevated Sinach’s career but also brought Nigerian gospel music to the international stage. The outcome of this lawsuit could have far-reaching implications for artists and producers alike. “It’s crucial for the industry to address these issues to ensure fair treatment for all contributors,” said a prominent music producer.
