The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has initiated a manhunt for a bus driver and his conductor who abandoned a vehicle loaded with firearms in the bustling Oshodi area. This incident has raised significant concerns about the proliferation of illegal arms in Lagos, a city already grappling with various security challenges.
The discovery was made during a routine patrol by customs officers. The bus, which was flagged for inspection, was found to contain a cache of firearms, including rifles and ammunition. Upon realizing the impending search, the driver and conductor fled the scene, leaving the bus and its dangerous cargo behind.
Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Mohammed Abba-Kura, stated, “This discovery underscores the ongoing battle against illegal arms trafficking in Nigeria. We are committed to ensuring that these weapons do not reach the hands of criminals.”
The NCS has intensified efforts to apprehend the suspects, collaborating with other security agencies to track down the individuals responsible. The public has been urged to provide any information that could lead to their capture.
“We are appealing to anyone with information about the whereabouts of these individuals to come forward. The safety of our community depends on it,” added Abba-Kura.
This incident has sparked a broader conversation about security in Lagos. Residents are concerned about the ease with which firearms can be transported within the city. Community leaders are calling for increased vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
Local resident, Mrs. Funmi Adeyemi, expressed her worries, saying, “It’s frightening to think that such dangerous weapons were being transported through our streets. We need more stringent checks and community awareness to prevent such incidents.”
The NCS’s swift action in uncovering this arms cache is commendable, but the escape of the suspects highlights the need for enhanced security measures. As the manhunt continues, Lagosians are reminded of the importance of community cooperation in maintaining safety and security.
