The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has announced a strategic initiative to enhance connectivity between Export Processing Terminals (EPTs) and Domestic Export Warehouses (DEWs) across the country. This move aims to streamline export processes and create pathways for small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) to thrive.
The Nigerian Ports Authority, established in 1954, is responsible for managing and operating the ports in Nigeria. Over the years, the NPA has been pivotal in facilitating maritime trade and ensuring the efficient movement of goods in and out of the country. However, the export process has often been hampered by bureaucratic bottlenecks and infrastructural challenges, making Nigerian exports less competitive on the global stage.
The NPA’s latest initiative, announced by Managing Director Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho at the 2024 Lagos International Trade Fair, is designed to address these challenges by linking EPTs with DEWs. This linkage is expected to facilitate smoother port-hinterland connectivity and enhance the efficiency of export operations.
- Infrastructure Development: The initiative will focus on upgrading infrastructure to ensure seamless movement of goods from the EPTs to the DEWs. This includes the development of reliable transport networks and storage facilities.
- Automation and Digitalisation: The NPA is aggressively pursuing the full automation of port processes through the Ports Community System (PCS). This system will lay the groundwork for the implementation of the National Single Window (NSW), which aims to simplify and expedite trade procedures.
- Partnerships and Collaboration: The NPA is working in synergy with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and other relevant partners to ensure the success of this initiative. These collaborations are crucial for eliminating duplications and bureaucratic overlaps that have previously hindered export activities.
This initiative is expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s export capacity by reducing turnaround times and improving the overall efficiency of the export process. By creating a more conducive environment for SMEs, the NPA aims to enhance Nigeria’s trade balance and promote economic growth.
