In a shocking incident on November 11, 2024, a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer was brutally attacked by a commercial bus driver and his conductor. The incident occurred during an arrest attempt in the Oshodi area of Lagos. The officer was doused with petrol and set ablaze, resulting in severe injuries.
LASTMA officers are responsible for managing traffic and ensuring compliance with traffic laws in Lagos. However, they often face hostility from commercial drivers who view their enforcement actions as punitive. This incident highlights the ongoing tension between traffic enforcement officers and commercial drivers in Lagos.
According to eyewitnesses, the altercation began when the LASTMA officer attempted to arrest the bus driver for obstructing traffic. The driver and his conductor resisted, leading to a physical confrontation. In a horrifying turn of events, the conductor poured petrol on the officer and set him on fire. Bystanders quickly intervened, using water and fire extinguishers to douse the flames.
A witness, Mr. Adewale, described the scene: “It was a chaotic situation. People were screaming and trying to help the officer. It’s unimaginable that someone could do such a thing over a traffic violation.”
The Lagos State Government has condemned the attack and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated, “This act of violence against a law enforcement officer is unacceptable. We will ensure that those responsible face the full wrath of the law.”
The incident has sparked outrage among Lagos residents, with many calling for stricter penalties for assaults on law enforcement officers. LASTMA has also announced plans to review its safety protocols to protect its officers from such attacks in the future.
