Shola Shoretire, the Nigerian-eligible forward, is set to triumphantly return to Old Trafford on Thursday, November 7, 2024, as his new team PAOK takes on Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League. This marks 900 days since Shoretire last played for the Red Devils in a competitive match.
Shoretire began his youth career with Whitley Bay Boys Club before moving to Newcastle United. He later had stints with Manchester City and Manchester United at the youth level. In 2021, Shoretire signed his first professional contract with Manchester United but was sent on loan after making three appearances. He played for Bolton Wanderers in 2023 before completing a move to Greek outfit PAOK this summer.
Shoretire’s return to Old Trafford is highly anticipated. “It’s an amazing feeling to be back,” Shoretire said. “When we found out we were playing against them, it was a big surprise, but very nice to be back.” Despite his excitement, Shoretire remains respectful towards his former club, stating, “I wouldn’t be in this position without them.”
Shoretire’s father has expressed his desire for his son to play for Nigeria, and the Nigeria Football Federation has been contacted regarding his eligibility. However, the English Football Association is also monitoring his situation. “I’m giving a good account of myself at Manchester United,” Shoretire’s father stated.
Shoretire made history in February 2021 when he became the youngest player to feature for Manchester United in a European match at 17 years and 23 days. He was named the 2020-21 Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year for his efforts. “It’s an achievement I’m very thankful for,” Shoretire said. “I put in a lot of hard work, and I was very thankful to be blessed with that opportunity.”
Shoretire is focused on his future with PAOK and aims to help his team secure a win against his former club. “We’re here to win tomorrow. That’s why we’re here, and we believe we can do this.”
