Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, today announced the official launch of the Lagos Mass Rail Transit (LMRT) Red Line, marking the start of commercial operations on the 27-kilometer rail route from Agbado to Oyingbo. The Red Line is the state’s second operational rail system in under two years, following the launch of the Blue Line in 2022.
“We’re on a mission to keep Lagos moving, and the Red Line is a key part of our vision to create a seamlessly connected city,” Sanwo-Olu said at the launch event. With eight stations—Oyingbo, Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, Iju, and Agbado—the Red Line is projected to serve around 500,000 passengers daily as train schedules expand.
The Red Line aims to ease the notorious traffic congestion in Lagos, providing commuters with a faster and more efficient option. “This project belongs to all of us,” the governor emphasised, urging Lagosians to safeguard the infrastructure. “Vandalism or disruptions will not be tolerated—together, we can ensure that our trains remain a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.”
Passenger services will commence daily at 6:00 AM from Agbado, with the second departure at 7:30 AM from Iju. Commuters are required to use the Cowry Card for boarding, ensuring smooth entry and exit at each station.
The new rail system is part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State government to transform the city’s transportation network. The Red Line will provide a vital link across key districts, with residents encouraged to embrace the service for a more connected and efficient Lagos.
