Tragic multi-vehicle collision claims three lives in Lagos following tanker’s brake failure

In a devastating accident on Sunday, three people lost their lives in a multi-vehicle collision after a tanker carrying black oil experienced brake failure. The incident occurred around 6 PM at Second Rainbow, inward Mile 2, along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

The tanker, fully loaded with black oil, lost control and crashed into two Volkswagen commercial buses and a Honda car, identified by the license plate KTU 223 GH. All three victims, who were passengers in one of the Volkswagen buses, died at the scene from severe injuries.

Emergency responders, including officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), quickly arrived to manage the situation. Two of the deceased were handed over to the Festac Police Station, while a family member of the third victim took custody of their loved one. The Lagos State Fire Services and LASMBUS were also present to aid in the rescue efforts.

Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He emphasised the importance of strict adherence to road safety measures, particularly for drivers of heavy-duty vehicles.

“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate loss of life. It is imperative that every driver, particularly those operating heavy-duty vehicles, remains vigilant and cautious at all times. Speed and safety must never be compromised on our roads,” Mr. Bakare-Oki said in a statement.

LASTMA has reiterated its call for stricter safety regulations for tanker drivers, urging them to obey speed limits and prioritise the safety of all road users.
