The Lagos State Government has issued an urgent evacuation order for the Mopol 20 Barracks in Onigbongbo, Ikeja, due to the imminent risk of building collapse. The decision follows a critical assessment by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), which revealed severe structural deficiencies in Block 3 of the barracks.
“The agency dispatched a response team to the location, and their findings indicate that the building and adjacent structures must be evacuated without delay,” said Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA. “Our response plan includes a thorough assessment, safe and orderly evacuation, and controlled demolition.”
Residents of the barracks have been instructed to vacate the premises immediately to prevent any potential loss of life or property. The Lagos State Government has assured the public that the evacuation and subsequent demolition will be conducted in a controlled manner to mitigate risks.
“We are prioritising public safety and urge everyone to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation about the situation on social media,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.
The evacuation order has raised concerns among the residents, many of whom have lived in the barracks for years. “We understand the need for safety, but this is a difficult situation for us,” said Mr. Chukwuma, a long-time resident. “We hope the government will provide us with temporary housing and support during this period.”
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has emphasized the importance of taking preemptive measures to avoid disasters. “Under the watchful eye of the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu administration, we will be carrying out this preemptive demolition action due to the precarious conditions of the building and possible secondary incidents that could occur if left unmanaged,” the governor stated.
Human rights organizations have called for transparency and adequate support for the displaced residents. “The government must ensure that the affected families are provided with alternative housing and necessary assistance,” said a spokesperson for the Lagos Human Rights Commission.
The situation remains tense as the evacuation process continues, with many residents anxiously awaiting further instructions from the authorities.
