The Aiyetoro community is in turmoil following the demolition of homes, which has left many residents homeless and distraught. The demolition, which took place without prior notice, has been met with fierce protests from the affected families.
“We were not given any warning,” said Mr. Adewale, a long-time resident of Aiyetoro. “One day we had homes, and the next day, everything was gone. Where are we supposed to go now?”
This incident comes on the heels of the recent destruction of the Okobaba Sawmill in Yaba due to a fire outbreak. The sawmill’s destruction had already displaced numerous workers and their families, adding to the community’s woes.
“The government needs to step in and provide immediate relief,” urged Mrs. Olufunke, another resident. “We have children, elderly people, and nowhere to go. This is a humanitarian crisis.”
Human rights organizations have also weighed in, calling for urgent action to address the plight of the displaced residents. “The government must ensure that these families are provided with alternative housing and basic necessities,” said a spokesperson for the Lagos Human Rights Commission.
The Lagos State Government has yet to issue a formal response to the protests, but the situation remains tense as residents continue to demand justice and support.
