Tito Jackson, Jackson 5 legend, dies at 70

The music world is mourning the loss of Tito Jackson, one of the founding members of the iconic Jackson 5. Jackson passed away on September 15 at the age of 70, as confirmed by his sons in a heartfelt social media statement. “It’s with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved father, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson, is no longer with us,” TJ, Taj, and Taryll Jackson shared on Instagram. “We are shocked, saddened, and heartbroken. Our father was an incredible man who cared about everyone and their well-being.”

Jackson’s sons paid tribute to their father, reflecting on the different ways people knew him. “Some of you may know him as Tito Jackson from the legendary Jackson 5, some may know him as ‘Coach Tito,’ or some know him as ‘Poppa T.’ Nevertheless, he will be missed tremendously.” As of now, the cause of death has not been confirmed .

Born Toriano Adaryll Jackson in Gary, Indiana, Tito was a key figure in the rise of the Jackson 5, signing with Motown Records in 1969 and contributing to timeless hits such as “I’ll Be There,” “I Want You Back,” and “ABC.” The group’s success eventually earned Tito induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Even after The Jackson 5 era, music remained a central part of Tito’s life, with his sons carrying on the family tradition through their R&B band, 3T .

Tito also shared a deep bond with his children, often expressing his pride in their accomplishments. In 2022, he celebrated his youngest son TJ’s first solo show in Paris, highlighting how music continued to run in the Jackson family. “I enjoyed watching my youngest son TJ perform his very first solo show last weekend in Paris,” Tito wrote, noting that his grandson Royal was also there .

Before his passing, Tito had been performing in Europe and took time to visit a memorial for his late brother, Michael Jackson, who died in 2009. Four days before his death, Tito shared a reflection on Facebook, saying, “We’re deeply grateful for this special place that honors not only his memory but also our shared legacy.” He also honored what would have been Michael’s 66th birthday, writing, “I miss you, Mike, but your light will always shine bright.”
