The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Enforcement Agency has apprehended four individuals suspected to be linked to the August 13 attack on a Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) bus. The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Agency, Mr. Tayo Akerele, during a press briefing in Lagos.
The bus, which was traveling from Orile-Iganmu to Alaba Suru, was reportedly attacked by hoodlums who robbed passengers of their belongings and vandalized the vehicle. Mr. Akerele identified the suspects as Ilesanmi Kazeem, Ibrahim Lawal, Daniel Abati, and Mohammed Ali. “We must bring them to justice to deter others from such attitude,” he stated, expressing regret over the consistent attacks on BRT buses by miscreants.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the suspects will face prosecution. Mr. Akerele emphasized the government’s zero tolerance for such destructive acts, adding that prosecuting the offenders would serve as a deterrent to others.
Also speaking at the briefing, Mr. Emmanuel Oyewole, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Operations, Lagos Command, described the attack as unfortunate and warned that the government would not condone such behavior. “So far, four suspects have been apprehended. One Mohammad Ali, aged 30, who was apprehended, mentioned the other three, while others are still at large,” he said. “The offence was carried out in broad daylight. It is highly condemnable. At the end of our investigation, they will be charged to court.”
The raid that led to the capture of the suspects was conducted by men of the task force operating in the affected area. Mr. Oyewole reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of commuters and maintaining law and order in the state.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of public transportation in Lagos, with many calling for increased security measures to protect passengers and prevent future attacks.
