The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is gearing up to host the 11th Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games, with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola announcing that the institution will field 143 athletes in the highly anticipated event. The games, which will be co-hosted by UNILAG and Lagos State University (LASU), are set to take place from September 20 to 29, bringing together student-athletes from across the continent.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Senate Chambers of UNILAG in Akoka, Lagos, Prof. Ogunsola emphasized the university’s commitment to excellence. “We have a number of sports that will see our talented sportsmen and women compete,” she said. “UNILAG has always been a beacon of excellence in academics and sports, and we are committed to making these games a resounding success.”
The FASU Games, themed “Unite, Compete and Excel,” will feature participants from 43 countries, competing in 17 events including Athletics, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Handball, Badminton, and Tennis, among others. UNILAG’s 143-strong team will consist of 85 male and 58 female athletes, competing for top honors across various disciplines. “In football alone, we have 18 men and 18 women set to take the field,” Prof. Ogunsola noted, adding that the university will also field athletes in swimming, chess, judo, and taekwondo.
The opening ceremony of the 10-day event is scheduled for September 21 at the UNILAG Sports Complex, with the closing ceremony to be held on September 28 at LASU in Ojo. As the host institution, UNILAG is leaving no stone unturned in its preparations. An on-the-spot assessment of the UNILAG sports complex reveals a venue in top condition, ready to welcome athletes and spectators alike. “Hosting these games is an opportunity to contribute to the development of sports on our continent, while also showcasing the incredible potential within our students,” Prof. Ogunsola remarked.
The Vice-Chancellor underscored the broader significance of the FASU Games, stating, “The games are not merely about sports; they represent a vision of unity, youth empowerment, and academic excellence across Africa. For us at UNILAG, this is a platform for our student-athletes to exhibit their hard work, resilience, and discipline.”
