At the 8th National Cooperative Summit, Exhibition & Awards, Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade & Investment, Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, underscored the pivotal role of the cooperative movement in empowering communities and driving inclusive governance. Speaking at the event, which was organised by the Cooperative Federation of Nigeria (CFN) at the LASCOFED Secretariat, Ogba, she highlighted, “Cooperatives are a strong tool for alleviating poverty and fostering inclusive growth.”
Ambrose-Medebem praised the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for prioritising an environment where cooperative societies can thrive. “We have been collaborating closely with the Lagos State Cooperative Federation to channel resources that bolster the cooperative sector. These initiatives have enabled cooperatives to expand their businesses, thereby improving the livelihoods of their members,” she noted.
The Commissioner also emphasised that the government’s efforts have streamlined operations, enhanced transparency, and strengthened governance structures within cooperative societies. She urged cooperatives to “evolve, innovate, and thrive while staying true to their core principles of mutual aid and solidarity.”
Echoing the Commissioner’s sentiments, President of the Cooperative Federation of Nigeria, Oriyomi Ayeola, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its continued support. “Lagos State Cooperative Movement remains the pacesetter in cooperative matters in Nigeria and beyond, thanks to the enabling environment provided by the state government,” Ayeola remarked.
