The body of Nigeria’s former Senate President, Joseph Wayas, arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Wednesday, three years after his death in London. The remains were transported from Heathrow Airport in London via British Airways flight 083 and were received by Senator Jarigbe Agom, House of Representatives member Peter Akpanke, family members, and other stakeholders.
Born on May 21, 1941, Wayas passed away on November 30, 2021, in a London hospital after a prolonged illness. His body landed in Abuja at 4:40 am, marking the end of a lengthy process to bring him back home.
Senator Jarigbe expressed gratitude to Cross River State Governor Prince Bassey Otu for facilitating the return of Wayas’ body and assured that the former statesman would receive a befitting state burial. “We have come to receive the body of late Senate President Joseph Wayas. Thanks to Governor Otu, we succeeded in bringing the body back to the country. The governor will ensure a state burial for this elder statesman,” he stated.
The lawmaker also acknowledged the resolution of issues that had delayed the body’s return and thanked stakeholders in Cross River North, led by Dr. Doncklaimz Enamhe, for their support. Jarigbe signed the condolence register at Wayas’ Asokoro residence in Abuja.
Peter Akpanke, representing the Obanliku/Bekwarra/Obudu federal constituency, remarked on Wayas’ contributions to his people and national development. “Dr. Joseph Wayas was a political father and mentor. He served two terms as Senate President without impeachment and significantly impacted many lives. He founded FC Obudu and built numerous leaders. Today, we honor his legacy,” Akpanke said.
