Financial services sector dominates trading activities on NGX equity market

The financial services sector took the lead in trading activities on the equity market of the Nigerian Exchange Ltd. (NGX) during the week, as investors engaged in transactions totalling 1.6 billion shares valued at N36.50 billion across 42,546 deals.

According to the NGX weekly market report, this week’s turnover contrasted with the previous week’s figures of 2.478 billion shares valued at N47.856 billion traded in 54,982 deals.

Highlighting the breakdown, the financial services industry emerged as the frontrunner in terms of volume, with 1.127 billion shares valued at N18.908 billion exchanged in 19,424 deals. This segment contributed significantly, accounting for 72.27% of the total equity turnover volume and 51.81% of the value.

Following closely, the conglomerate industry witnessed 117.400 million shares worth N1.508 billion traded in 2,775 deals, while the consumer goods sector recorded a turnover of 98.422 million shares valued at N4.008 billion in 6,322 deals.

Trading in the top three equities, namely United Bank for Africa (UBA), FBN Holdings Plc, and Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO), accounted for 389.286 million shares valued at N11.757 billion in 5,372 deals. This constituted 24.96% of the total equity turnover in volume and 32.21% in value.

Meanwhile, exchange-traded products (ETPs) saw investors transact 27,394 units valued at N16.787 million this week in 239 deals, marking a decline from the previous week’s figures of 3.144 million units valued at N108.299 million traded in 659 deals.

In the bond market, a total of 639,482 units valued at N638.502 million were traded this week in 24 deals, compared with 69,544 units valued at N67.744 million transacted last week in 35 deals.

Consequently, the NGX All-Share Index and market capitalization experienced a 3.79% increase, closing the week at 105,722.78 and N57.850 trillion, respectively.

Furthermore, 35 equities appreciated during the week, with 51 equities depreciating and 68 remaining unchanged.
