Napoli FC’s Victor Osimhen missed the Super Eagles’ departure to Bouake for the crucial semifinal against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, citing abdominal discomfort, according to a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report. Nigeria, after a 1-0 victory over Angola, left their Abidjan base for Bouake on Monday.
Media officer Babafemi Raji explained Osimhen’s absence, stating, “Team medics confirmed that he has been placed under close watch… If cleared by tomorrow morning, he will join the rest of the squad.” The absence of the star striker raises concerns ahead of the match.
Meanwhile, football analyst Festus Alenkhe advocates for Kelechi Iheanacho’s inclusion, emphasising that it would enhance the team’s strength. Alenkhe, also the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Edo Council, commended the team for their hard-fought victory against Angola, urging them to secure the trophy.
Alenkhe stressed the need for midfield improvement, remarking, “We need to improve on our midfield… the defence is very okay and the attack too.” His remarks highlight tactical considerations crucial for Nigeria’s success.
In a separate development, the Super Eagles departed for Bouake on Monday night, ahead of the semifinal showdown. Team spirit remains high as they anticipate the encounter against South Africa. Babafemi Raji confirmed the departure, stating, “The boys are in high spirits… set to leave for Bouake.”
Notably, Nigeria’s historical clashes with South Africa in AFCON tournaments add anticipation to the upcoming match. The stage is set for a fierce battle at the Stade de la Paix, Bouake, reminiscent of past encounters where Nigeria displayed dominance over their South African counterparts.
As the Super Eagles prepare for the semifinal, attention shifts to the tactical decisions of the coaching staff and the performance of the team, aiming for a spot in the 2023 AFCON final. The absence of Osimhen and the potential inclusion of Iheanacho underscore the intricacies and challenges faced by the Nigerian squad.
