A warehouse in a 14 storey building on Broad Street, Lagos Island, caught fire on Sunday afternoon, prompting a massive response from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
The fire, which started on the first floor of the Mandilas Building, spread to the fourth floor, sending plumes of smoke into the sky. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
Margaret Adeseye, the director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, said that firefighters from Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu fire stations were on the scene, conducting ongoing firefighting operations.
“We received a distress call at 13:15hrs and we immediately dispatched our fire trucks and personnel to the scene. We are working hard to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other floors and buildings,” she said.
She added that no casualties have been reported so far, and urged the public to stay away from the area and allow the firefighters to do their work.
The Mandilas Building is a landmark in Lagos, housing several shops, offices, and warehouses. It is not clear how much damage the fire has caused to the property and the goods stored in the warehouse.
