The highly-anticipated Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 is set to kick off in Cote d’Ivoire, and the Super Eagles of Nigeria have made a grand entrance into Abidjan, exuding style and enthusiasm.
The team, sporting a striking all-white traditional kaftan paired with green caps, made a statement upon their arrival at the Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International Airport, Abidjan, via a chartered flight. Fans welcomed them with exuberance, expressing their excitement by hailing and scrambling to capture moments with the team.
In the words of team captain Ahmed Musa, “We are thrilled to be here, and the warm welcome from the fans truly motivates us. We are ready to give our best in the tournament.”
Before their departure, the Super Eagles were treated to a send-forth dinner hosted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos. The governor emphasised the significance of unity and resilience, urging the team to make Nigeria proud. Sanwo-Olu stated, “This is a moment of pride for our nation, and I believe the Super Eagles will showcase the strength and spirit of Nigeria.”
The team had a week-long pre-tournament training in Abu Dhabi, setting the stage for their AFCON journey. In Abidjan, the Super Eagles will be accommodated at the prestigious Pullman Hotel as they embark on their group-stage campaign.
A notable absence from the initial entourage includes strikers Kelechi Iheanacho and Terem Moffi, both expected to join the team later. Iheanacho, recovering from a muscular injury sustained at Leicester City FC, assured fans, saying, “I am working hard on my recovery and will join my teammates soon to contribute to our success.”
Moffi, a late replacement for the injured Victor Boniface, will link up with the squad after participating in a crucial Ligue 1 match against Rennes on Saturday. The dynamic striker conveyed his eagerness, stating, “I am honoured to be part of the Super Eagles, and I am committed to making a positive impact once I join the team.”
As the Super Eagles gear up for their opening match against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, the stage is set for a thrilling AFCON spectacle. The subsequent clashes against hosts Cote d’Ivoire on Jan. 18 and Guinea-Bissau on Jan. 22 promise intense competition and are eagerly awaited by fans worldwide.
