In a decisive move aligning with his commitment to transparency and accountability, President Bola Tinubu has taken swift action by suspending Dr. Betta Edu, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The suspension comes as part of a broader directive to investigate the financial transactions within the Ministry and its associated agencies.
President Tinubu highlighted, “Upholding integrity and transparency in managing Nigeria’s wealth is paramount. Suspending Dr. Edu is a necessary step to ensure a thorough investigation into financial matters that require scrutiny.”
The suspended minister has been instructed to hand over responsibilities to the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary. President Tinubu emphasised, “Full cooperation with investigating authorities is imperative. We are committed to unraveling any irregularities to maintain public trust.”
Additionally, a panel, led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, has been tasked to review the financial architecture of social investment programmes. This comprehensive review aims to overhaul the relevant institutions and programmes, aiming to eradicate any systemic weaknesses and regain public confidence in these initiatives.
The President’s directives are effective immediately, signifying a firm commitment to ensuring accountability and rectifying any discrepancies found within governmental structures.
