Argentinian maestro Lionel Messi secured Time magazine’s Athlete of the Year for 2023, marking a triumphant year that encompassed his eighth Ballon d’Or victory and an illustrious move to Inter Miami, significantly amplifying soccer’s presence in the U.S.
Messi’s instrumental role in leading Argentina to their first World Cup title in 36 years, triumphing over France in the final, anchored his remarkable year. Reflecting on his pivotal career move, Messi deliberated multiple offers before committing to Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami, despite tantalizing propositions from his former club Barcelona and Saudi-based Al-Hilal.
“Fortunately, I had several options on the table that were interesting. It was a decision I had to weigh carefully with my family before choosing Miami,” Messi shared with Time.
Upon his arrival at Inter Miami, Messi made an immediate impact, scoring 10 goals in seven League Cup appearances, propelling the team to victory in the tournament encompassing the MLS and Mexican teams.
Off the field, Messi’s presence sparked unprecedented interest, triggering a surge in searches for match schedules and tickets to witness his performances. Fans flocked to acquire his official pink Inter Miami jersey, escalating ticket prices for Inter Miami games and catalysing a spike in subscriptions for Apple TV, the MLS’s 10-year partner.
“Messi managed the impossible: he transformed the U.S. into a soccer nation,” Time lauded.
This prestigious accolade adds to a lineage of esteemed athletes receiving the award, including Simone Biles, LeBron James, and the U.S. women’s soccer team, emphasising Messi’s global impact on the sport.
