More than 35 teams are gearing up for the second phase of the Beach Volleyball tour, which is slated to take place from October 28 to November 5 in Jalingo, Taraba. Stephen Hasso, the North East Zonal Representative of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) board, revealed on Friday in Abuja.
According to Hasso, the competition holds great promise for the development of the sport within the state, affirming, “The competition will enhance the development of the sport in the state.”
Hasso emphasised the significance of this 10-day event in the federation’s calendar, particularly due to international commitments. He revealed that the competition will play a pivotal role in preparing the National Under-21 players for the World Beach Volleyball Championship in Thailand, scheduled for November. Hasso explained, “If you look at the FIVB calendar, we have some international championships, and this will serve as a training tour for our players going for the World Championship.”
The Taraba government received praise from Hasso for their support in hosting the competition. He declared, “Taraba is the new home of beach volleyball. Gov. Agbu Kefas has shown the desire to develop volleyball and other sports in the state.”
Furthermore, Hasso disclosed that national coaches Francis Imoudu and John Iwerima will be in attendance to observe the competition. They may extend trial invitations to deserving players for subsequent national camps.
The competition is set to kick off on Saturday, with the final day of action scheduled for November 5.
