Israel’s emergency government unites amid escalating conflict

In a dramatic turn of events, Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, issued a stern warning, declaring “every Hamas member was ‘a dead man'” during the first meeting of the nation’s emergency government. His statement came alongside that of the opposition figure, Benny Gantz, who characterised the situation as “a time for war.”

The escalating crisis in the region has led to a tragic death toll in Israel, with over 1,200 lives lost. More than 1,100 individuals have fallen victim to Israeli airstrikes on Gaza.

However, the United States President, Joe Biden, responded with a plea for adherence to the rules of warfare. He stated that Israel must “operate by the rules of war” and emphasised the importance of abiding by the principles outlined in the Geneva Conventions. President Biden also issued a caution to Iran, which had expressed support for the Hamas attack, urging them to “be careful.”

The unexpected unity between Netanyahu and Gantz marked a significant shift, as the two put aside their bitter political rivalry. This move followed widespread protests in the nation.

Addressing the Israeli citizens, Benny Gantz conveyed that the newly-formed government was “united” and prepared to “wipe this thing called Hamas off the face of the Earth.”

Notably, the new temporary cabinet also includes Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and Gadi Eisenkot as an observer, both known for their expertise in military strategy.

The emergency government’s formation signifies a broader national consensus in support of military action, ensuring that senior appointments will be automatically extended during the wartime period. All government decisions and bills not related to the conduct of the war have been put on hold.

The unity government emerged in the wake of devastating attacks by Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip. The death toll in Israel continues to rise following a surprise Hamas attack on Saturday. It has been reported that Hamas has taken hostages, including elderly individuals and children.

As tensions rise, Israel has stationed thousands of troops near the Gaza border, preparing for a potential land invasion. Additionally, Israel has exchanged fire with Hezbollah militia in Lebanon and forces in Syria.

Notably, Israel initiated a retaliatory siege of the Palestinian territory earlier this week, leading to a halt in energy, water, and food supplies. Tragically, more than 1,000 people have lost their lives in air strikes in Gaza thus far.

The formation of this unity government has received positive reactions from ministers, including Itamar Ben Gvir, who handles national security. “Congratulations on the unity, now we have to win,” he expressed.

The development of this unity government follows months of protests against Netanyahu’s attempts to push through controversial judicial reforms. Demonstrators, backed by political rivals and prominent figures from various sectors, have voiced their concerns.
