Glovo, Africa’s leading multi-category app, has introduced “The Couriers Pledge” in Nigeria, aimed at elevating the social rights and benefits available to couriers, irrespective of their employment or work status with the company.

Mrs. Lamide Akinola, the General Manager of Glovo Nigeria, made the announcement in a statement released on Wednesday in Lagos, highlighting the company’s unwavering commitment to this initiative.

The “Couriers Pledge,” initially introduced in 2021, has already positively impacted over 40,000 couriers in various countries where Glovo operates worldwide. The launch of this program in Nigeria signifies that the courier’s pledge is now being implemented across all African countries where Glovo operates.

Under the Couriers Pledge, Glovo is committed to ensuring fairer earnings, comprehensive safety measures, proactive management, and the overall well-being of its courier community.

Akinola emphasised, “We believe that couriers deserve equal access to social rights and benefits, regardless of their contractual relationship with the platform. The successful launch of The Couriers Pledge in Nigeria represents a significant step towards creating a fairer working environment for our couriers in the region. We are proud to have all African markets covered under this initiative.”

Mrs. Bolanle Tiamiyu, the General Manager of the Lagos State Drivers Institute (LASDRI), praised Glovo for its dedication to enhancing the rights and benefits of couriers, who play a vital role in the local service delivery ecosystem. She stressed the importance of such initiatives in ensuring the well-being of couriers and the broader community.

Tiamiyu noted, “Glovo’s focus on safety and training is commendable, and it sets a positive example for the industry. Providing couriers with essential skills and knowledge is crucial for ensuring safer roads and better services.”

In collaboration with the Fairwork Foundation, Glovo utilised principles and data on fair earnings and living wages to develop The Couriers Pledge. This initiative aims to establish a new industry standard for fair working conditions in the gig economy, reflecting a commitment to improving the lives of couriers who contribute to the platform’s success.
