The Lagos State Government has initiated a comprehensive crackdown on unregistered and unpainted vehicles operating within the state, aiming to bolster road safety, enhance security, and effectively regulate the transportation sector.
Mr. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, revealed this development on Tuesday in Lagos, underscoring the critical importance of this initiative. Over the past 48 hours, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority’s (LASTMA) team has taken into custody more than 200 unregistered and unpainted vehicles.
Unregistered vehicles pose a significant risk to road safety and security by circumventing essential inspections and regulations, jeopardising their overall roadworthiness. This enforcement operation is a decisive measure to address these concerns and ensure that all vehicles on Lagos State’s roads adhere to the requisite registration and licencing requirements.
Mr. Giwa emphasised that this ongoing crackdown forms an integral part of the state government’s broader efforts to establish safer and more efficient transportation systems within Lagos State.
Additionally, Giwa highlighted that the enforcement operation had uncovered instances where certain transport companies along the CMS, Obalende, Ajah, and Ojo Cantonment corridors were operating their vehicle fleets without the necessary documentation. The state government views this transgression seriously and will hold these companies accountable for their actions.
Transport companies found operating without the requisite documentation will face legal consequences, Giwa cautioned. Emphasising the importance of vehicle registration and compliance with transport regulations, he noted that impounded vehicles would only be released once they had undergone proper registration and met all the mandatory safety standards.
Giwa reiterated the state government’s steadfast commitment to enhancing road safety and ensuring that all transport operators adhere to the necessary regulations.
