Celebrities and Fans Join Candlelight Procession for Late Singer Mohbad as Investigation Continues

Nigerian music stars Davido, Zlatan, and Falz, along with a multitude of fans, joined a poignant candlelight procession in honour of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, on Thursday evening in Lekki, Lagos. The event also saw the participation of the Lagos State Commissioner for Youths and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende.

The atmosphere was charged with emotion as fans, in large numbers, echoed the chant, “Justice for Mohbad,” while Falz and popular on-air personality Oladotun Kayode, known as Dotun, coordinated the crowd. Many supporters held placards bearing various inscriptions demanding justice for the late singer.

The peaceful procession commenced at the Lekki Phase 1 Gate and culminated at the serene Muri Okunola Park on Victoria Island. The event provided an opportunity for friends, fellow artists, and fans to come together in remembrance of Mohbad and to advocate for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his untimely passing.

Mohbad, aged 27, passed away on September 12, 2023, and was laid to rest the following day. The Lagos Police Command exhumed his body on Thursday for further investigation, following allegations and speculations surrounding his death.

The acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, ordered a thorough investigation, and SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Command’s public relations officer, confirmed that the exhumation had taken place.

Allegations and speculations have surrounded Mohbad’s passing, necessitating a thorough probe by the police. The investigation committee, comprising 19 members, is tasked with various aspects of the inquiry, including the autopsy, scene visit, examination of medical reports, review of records of suspects, and statements from witnesses.

The autopsy results are eagerly awaited, as they are expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death and provide crucial evidence in the investigation.

Furthermore, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has invited the State Security Service (SSS) to collaborate with the police in uncovering the truth behind the artist’s death. Governor Sanwo-Olu stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration and the use of advanced technology to ensure a thorough investigation.

The hashtag #justiceformohbad has gained momentum on social media platforms, with supporters of the late singer taking to the streets to demand justice and accountability. While some have speculated about potential involvement by individuals associated with Mohbad’s former record label, Marlian Records, Naira Marley, the label’s owner, has called for a thorough investigation and pledged his assistance in uncovering any foul play or injustice.

The candlelight procession, which attracted notable celebrities and ardent supporters, emphasises the widespread demand for justice and accountability in the case of the adored Afrobeat singer. It is a poignant reminder of the posthumous impact that Mohbad has had on the Nigerian music industry and the growing deep connection he now shares with his fans.

As the investigation progresses, Mohbad’s legacy lives on through the unity and determination of those who seek answers and justice for the talented young artist who left us too soon.
