Lagos BECE candidates get second chance for English and Math

The Lagos State Examinations Board has announced that candidates who did not achieve passing grades in Mathematics and English Language during the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will have the opportunity to retake these subjects.

Mr. Fatai Bakare, the Board’s Public Affairs Officer, conveyed this information on Wednesday in Lagos. The resit examination has been scheduled for October 5.

Bakare explained that the examination would take place at designated centres throughout the state and is intended for JSS 3 candidates in both public and approved private secondary schools.

It is mandatory for students transitioning from JSS 3 to SS1 in public and approved private secondary schools to have passing grades in Mathematics and English Language.

Bakare emphasised, “Any candidate who did not pass English Studies and Mathematics or both during the 2023 BECE will be required to retake them. The Board is providing them another opportunity to retake these crucial subjects.”

“These two subjects are fundamental prerequisites, compulsory, and must be passed, in addition to obtaining at least four passing grades in other subjects, to qualify for promotion to SS1,” he added.

The Board’s Public Affairs Officer also disclosed that any student who did not attain passing grades in other subjects besides Mathematics and English Language would be required to repeat JSS3.

He urged school management and affected candidates to prepare adequately for the retake examination, emphasising that the state would not compromise its educational standards.
