NLC asks workers to return to work after warning strike

Following the conclusion of the two-day warning strike that the Congress called, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a directive for workers to return to work on Thursday. This announcement was made in a statement released by Mr. Joe Ajaero, the President of NLC, titled “The two-day Nationwide Warning Strike: Nigerian Workers Have Spoken.”

The strike, which unfolded on Tuesday and Wednesday, was initiated in response to unmet agreements by the Federal Government regarding the removal of petrol subsidies. As a consequence of the labor action, economic and commercial activities in several states of the Federation came to a standstill.

Ajaero commended all parties for their commitment and acknowledged significant progress made in achieving the goals set during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which led to the initiation of the warning strike.

He emphasized that the unified message of the workers had resonated loudly with the government, making it impossible for them to ignore the demands.

“As we conclude the two-day nationwide warning strike today, at midnight, we earnestly call upon all workers to gracefully conclude the strike and return to work tomorrow, in accordance with our initial agreement,” he urged.

Ajaero expressed profound appreciation for the unwavering determination and dedication of the workers, which played a pivotal role in the resounding success of the strike. He recognized their contributions as a demonstration of unwavering commitment to the shared cause.

In the event that the government fails to provide appropriate responses to the demands, Ajaero stressed that the Congress would encourage everyone to maintain their steadfast resolve. He underlined that the same passion and determination exhibited during the warning strike would be crucial if an indefinite nationwide strike becomes necessary.

Ajaero extended his commendation to all affiliates, state councils, and esteemed members for their unwavering support and active participation in the two-day nationwide warning strike. He reiterated that the collective effort was undertaken to emphasize the strong conviction that the government should prioritize the welfare of citizens and adhere to established statutes.
