In a firm admonition issued on Monday, the Lagos State Government directed truck drivers to exercise vigilance concerning height restriction barriers newly positioned at several bridges throughout Lagos, specifically designed for articulated vehicles.
Mr. Abdulhafiz Toriola, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, conveyed this message through an official statement in Lagos, pinpointing the bridges with these newly installed barriers, including Stadium, Ojuelegba, and Dorma Long bridges.
Toriola elucidated that the decision to implement these barriers followed a series of extensive deliberations with stakeholders. The primary aim was to curtail the frequent occurrences of accidents involving articulated vehicles, incidents that have resulted in the loss of lives and extensive property damage.
While acknowledging the presence of informative signage to forewarn truck drivers about the impending height restrictions, Toriola lamented that, regrettably, some truck drivers continued to collide with these barriers, leading to damage to the infrastructure.
Consequently, the state government has resolved to impose stringent sanctions on drivers who flout these regulations. To ensure compliance, enforcement personnel will be stationed at specified locations to monitor adherence to the prescribed restrictions.
The Permanent Secretary emphasised that the Lagos State Government’s installation of these truck barriers served a crucial purpose: to prevent accidents. In light of this, the government urged truck drivers to exercise patience when traversing these areas, emphasising that these measures are designed to enhance safety and prevent unfortunate incidents on the roads.
