The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) recommended that media practitioners in Lagos embrace the state government’s health insurance policy as a proactive measure for maintaining good health and well-being.
Mr. Ajayi Adeleye, Chairman of the NUJ Lagos State Chapter, offered this advice during the union’s Walk for Fitness event in Ikeja, as part of the activities for the union’s Press Week.
Journalists from various media outlets gathered at Ikeja UnderBridge, covering a distance of three kilometres to reach the NUJ Secretariat in Alausa.
Adeleye, who led the three-kilometre health walk, expressed concern over the limited participation in the council’s highly subsidised health programmes designed to assess journalists’ health status.
He encouraged journalists to undergo regular health check-ups, especially those not covered by federal health insurance policies, suggesting they engage with the state government’s initiative.
“The emphasis we place on health is the driving force behind this walk. Journalists should prioritise their health status,” he said.
Adeleye recommended that journalists take advantage of the existing health insurance schemes. Those not associated with the Federal and state civil service should consider joining the Lagos State Health Management Agency scheme.
He commended the substantial turnout of members and emphasised the importance of exercise in maintaining fitness.
Given the busy nature of journalists’ schedules, Adeleye explained that the program was essential for stress relief and overall fitness.
He called on journalists to be mindful of their health and make use of the union’s range of wellness initiatives.
Adeleye extended an invitation to members for a cultural day event scheduled for Thursday, 24th August. He announced that traditional meals and beverages would be served, celebrating the nation’s cultural heritage.
He encouraged members to dress in traditional attire, with awards promised for the best-dressed individuals.
He also outlined the remaining schedule for the Press Week, including a lecture on Wednesday, a Gala/Awards Night on Friday, as well as Jumat and Sunday thanksgiving events.
Julie Ekong, Chairperson of the Lagos NUJ Health Committee and Deputy Director of New Media at FRCN, listed the benefits of health walks and the council’s periodic health programs.
Ekong emphasised the importance of routine health checks and discouraged waiting until diseases progressed before seeking detection.
“We spend a lot of time sitting, in front of screens, talking, observing, and often eating late. When health programs are available, let’s actively participate,” she urged.
