The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has initiated an investigation into the tragic killing of a Lagos driver, identified as Mr. Lawal, on Thursday, August 17, reportedly at the hands of individuals allegedly donning military attire.
Lt.-Col. Olabisi Ayeni, the spokesperson for the Division, disclosed on Sunday that the investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the police, aiming to establish the identity of the suspected individuals.
“While details surrounding the incident remain limited, the army finds it imperative to inform the public about this occurrence,” said Ayeni in Lagos.
He went on to emphasise, “Measures are being taken to ascertain the identity of the individuals purportedly in military uniform, believed to be soldiers, and to unveil the circumstances leading to this unfortunate event.”
“If the suspects are identified as active-duty soldiers upon the conclusion of the investigation, they will be held accountable under both military and civilian legal frameworks,” Ayeni affirmed.
Highlighting the Division’s stance on the matter, Ayeni shared that Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Usman, the General Officer Commanding the Division, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and assured that justice would be meticulously served.
“As the investigation unfolds, the bereaved family is urged to exercise patience and await the investigation’s outcome. Anyone found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary measures,” Ayeni conveyed.
He further underscored the Nigerian Army’s uncompromising stand against misconduct by its personnel or their involvement in criminal activities, asserting the commitment to ensure that this allegation is thoroughly addressed.
