In a recent controversial decision, Elon Musk, the owner of social media company X, formerly known as Twitter, revealed plans to eliminate a protective functionality that enables users to block other accounts. This move has sparked debates within the company that Musk acquired last year.
The block feature on X allows users to restrict specific accounts from making contact, viewing their posts, or following them.
“Block is going to be deleted as a ‘feature’, except for DMs,” Musk communicated in a post on the platform, referring to direct messages.
He conveyed that X would retain the mute feature, which enables users to screen specified accounts. Unlike blocking, this action does not alert the other account about the action taken.
Elon Musk, the billionaire owner, has characterised himself as an advocate for free speech, though critics argue that his approach may be irresponsible. Research has identified an escalation in hate speech and antisemitic content on the platform since his takeover. Some governments have accused the company of inadequately moderating its content.
The decision to remove or restrict the block feature could potentially lead to conflicts with guidelines imposed by Apple’s App Store and Alphabet’s Google Play.
Apple stipulates that apps with user-generated content must possess the capability to block abusive users. Meanwhile, the Google Play Store mandates that apps offer an in-app system for blocking user-generated content and users.
At the time of writing, neither X, Google, nor Apple have responded to requests for comments on the matter.
In response to a plea from anti-bullying activist Monica Lewinsky, urging X to retain the “critical tool to keep people safe online,” Chief Executive Linda Yaccarino defended Musk’s decision.
“Our users’ safety on X is our number one priority. And we’re building something better than the current state of block and mute. Please keep the feedback coming,” Yaccarino conveyed.
The company has disclosed that Musk will lead the product and engineering teams, while Yaccarino will head all other teams, encompassing legal and sales.
