World Bank Applauds President Tinubu’s Reforms, Urges Swift Palliative Rollout

Shubham Chaudhuri, the World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, has praised President Bola Tinubu’s reform policies. Speaking at a symposium in Ibadan, Chaudhuri commended the policies while urging the prompt implementation of palliative measures to mitigate their impact on Nigerians.

The symposium’s theme was “Economic Opportunity Pathways to Navigating Post-Reform Challenges in Nigeria,” which the Department of Agricultural Economics organised in partnership with the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER).

Chaudhuri emphasised the timeliness of the symposium, providing a platform for discussions on navigating challenges post-removal of the fuel subsidy. He stressed the importance of effectively utilising the increased revenue for the benefit of ordinary citizens.

“We at the World Bank are ready to help with these, and we look forward to working closely with all stakeholders,” Chaudhuri stated, highlighting the bank’s commitment to supporting relief initiatives.

He underscored the necessity for clear, transparent, and detailed communication regarding the utilisation of funds, emphasising the role of civil society and the media in monitoring the implementation of announced measures.

Chaudhuri acknowledged the importance of collective action and applauded President Tinubu’s policy measures, noting the need for immediate delivery of relief packages, cash transfers, and palliatives.

The Director-General of NISER, Prof. Anthonia Simbine, acknowledged the challenges facing the country and emphasised the need for proper management to bring about positive changes. She encouraged patience and support for the government’s efforts to address long-standing issues.

Prof. Taiwo Awoyemi, Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Ibadan, highlighted the importance of sacrifice and collaborative efforts in realising Nigeria’s transformation agenda.

Recalling the National Economic Council’s endorsement of the NG-CARES program for palliative implementation, the symposium highlighted the ongoing commitment to address the socio-economic challenges facing the nation.
