Mr. Wasiu Adesina, the Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government (LG), delivered an insightful speech on Wednesday, urging retirees to steer clear of idleness and immerse themselves in activities that would invigorate their post-service years.
Adesina’s thoughtful guidance emerged during a commemorative event held at the local government secretariat in Ikorodu, aimed at honouring the esteemed retirees who have served between the years 2014 and 2023.
“As one phase concludes, a fresh chapter unfurls, brimming with novel encounters and anticipations. Retirement does not mark the culmination; rather, it signifies the commencement of a daring odyssey. It presents yet another opportunity for self-reinvention, a chance to craft a novel iteration of oneself,” expressed Adesina.
The chairman expressed his administration’s steadfast commitment to the welfare of the staff, firmly prioritising their well-being. Adesina underscored this commitment by detailing the refurbishment of staff offices, comprehensive enhancements to the work environment, and punctual disbursement of monthly staff allowances.
He also highlighted the refurbishment of the Agura Primary Health Centre in Ikorodu and the council area office, endeavours undertaken to enhance workers’ access to improved healthcare services and ensure their overall comfort.
Adesina extended his commendation to Adenike Mabodu, the Chairman of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Ikorodu, along with other union officials, for their unwavering support and invaluable contributions towards the advancement of the locality.
“Today’s celebration is an acknowledgment of your profound influence within your respective roles, an impact that resonates beyond words. I pledge to enlist some of you as consultants to my administration, a testament to the value you bring,” assured Adesina, underlining the significance of the occasion.
During the event, Mr. Muri Okunola, the Lagos State Head of Service, offered sound advice to workers yet to embark on their retirement journey, encouraging them to commence preparations six months prior to their transition. Mr. Biola Ayorinde, representing Okunola, applauded the chairman for organising the event and urged retirees to remain vigilant about their well-being, emphasising health management as a vital aspect.
The NULGE chairman echoed similar sentiments, advising retirees to be judicious in managing their finances, preserving their health, and adopting an active lifestyle through exercise.
In her appreciative comments, the NULGE chairman lauded Adesina for orchestrating the event, underscoring its significance for retirees as they enter a phase without salary income.
Mr. Adesanya Olatunde, a retiree, offered counsel to those still in active service, advocating for proactive retirement planning. He also advised prudence in utilising the funds provided by the council chairman.
Notably, each retiree was presented with gifts and an undisclosed monetary sum as part of the celebration, a gesture encapsulating the sentiment of appreciation and recognition.
