Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appealed to citizens to rally behind the government’s policy initiatives, emphasising the pivotal role of public relations in building mutual trust and understanding. Speaking at the 17th International Public Relations Congress organized by the Business Education Examinations Council (BEEC), Governor Sanwo-Olu underscored the importance of re-establishing trust and harmony for national development.
The Congress, themed “Re-building Trust, Mutual Understanding and Harmony for National Development,” is being held from August 15th to August 17th, 2023, at the prestigious Caeser’s Luxury Hotel in Lekki, Lagos State.
Addressing the esteemed gathering, Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ms Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, highlighted the ongoing efforts to reshape the state and country for the betterment of all citizens. He remarked, “The theme serves as a clarion call for human progress, good governance, and an equitable society, especially amidst the current global challenges.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised the pivotal role of public relations professionals in shaping public opinion about governmental policies. He acknowledged the need for expert guidance in managing perceptions, stating, “Your expertise and experience are required in managing and shaping the people’s perspective regarding these government policies that will engender confidence and mutual trust.”
He stressed that public relations practitioners possess the capability to inform and persuade the public, fostering a positive attitude that engenders confidence and mutual trust. The Governor articulated the broader implications of this, asserting, “In an atmosphere of mutual trust and understanding, citizens are more likely to embrace necessary sacrifices, recognising that these policies and programmes serve long-term benefits.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu rallied public relations professionals to adapt to evolving socio-economic dynamics, urging the formulation of strategies to achieve lofty goals. He also called for government officials to demonstrate transparency and accountability, reflecting a sincere commitment to addressing citizens’ needs.
Expounding on his administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, the Governor expounded, “Our agenda is people-oriented, comprehensive, all-inclusive, balanced, and sustainable. It aims to create a prosperous society through advancements in science, health, environment, education, and infrastructure.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence that the Congress would yield innovative ideas and strategies to boost public confidence, ultimately contributing to enhanced social and economic development. Mazi Mike Okereke, President of BEEC, concurred with the Governor’s sentiments, stressing the necessity for robust public relations practices to drive effective governance and national development.
