Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State hailed Prof. Oluwole Soyinka, the renowned Nobel Laureate, as Nigeria’s pride as he turns 89 years old. Prof. Soyinka, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986 and became the first sub-Saharan African to receive such an honour, marked his birthday on Thursday, July 13.
In a congratulatory message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Gov. Sanwo-Olu described Soyinka as a “quintessential scholar and literary icon” who has made significant contributions to literature, academics, and governance worldwide.
The governor commended Soyinka as a staunch advocate of good governance and emphasised that the Nobel Laureate’s achievements and influence have made him one of Nigeria’s biggest exports to the world.
“On behalf of my family, the government, and the people of Lagos State, I congratulate our literary icon and Nobel Laureate, Prof. Oluwole Soyinka, on his 89th birthday anniversary,” expressed Gov. Sanwo-Olu.
Highlighting Soyinka’s exceptional literary career, Gov. Sanwo-Olu acknowledged his excellence across various genres of literature, noting that his profound works continue to serve as points of reference in academic circles globally.
The governor further emphasized Soyinka’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of citizens and praised his legendary status, which stems from years of remarkable achievements and consistent advocacy for truth, justice, and equity.
“He is a great pride to Nigeria, Africa, and the entire black race,” Gov. Sanwo-Olu stated.
He highlighted Soyinka’s active role in championing good governance, both nationally and globally, consistently voicing his support for the masses on critical issues. Gov. Sanwo-Olu wished Prof. Soyinka good health and extended his best wishes for more years of distinguished service to Nigeria, the African continent, and the world at large.
